Soquel restaurant and music venue Michael’s on Main closed because of fire

The Soquel restaurant Michael’s on Main is closed indefinitely after a fire early Thursday.

The fire was reported by employees of a neighboring business at 4:30 a.m. No one was injured in the blaze, authorities said.

“We’re pretty sure it’s accidental, from what we’ve found so far,” said Mike DeMars, fire marshal for Central Fire District of Santa Cruz County. “It did start in the interior of the building, not the exterior. There’s no outside cause that we can see.”

The fire appeared to have originated in the restaurant’s food preparation and storage area before spreading through administrative offices, into storage above the office and onto the roof, according to DeMars.

While the fire was mostly contained to the building, he said, a nearby power line was burned through, temporarily affecting neighboring businesses and homes.

“The dining area, the bar, the outdoor seating area — heat and smoke damage, but salvageable,” DeMars said, before pointing to the fire-damaged side. “This part of the building is going to take some work. Obviously, the roof needs to be replaced. I’m not sure about the structural stability back here.”

The restaurant, near Highway 1 and Porter Street, was opened in 2001 by Michael Clark and has been owned since 2016 by Michael and Colleen Harrison. In addition to the dining room, it serves as a live music venue.
