They wanted to get a better understanding on the psychology behind people who actively seek out and engage in extramarital affairs and surveyed 2,000 users on the site — before and after they cheated.
Participants were asked about the state of their marriage, why they wanted to step out on their spouse, and their general well-being.

The team discovered that users showed little remorse and believe infidelity does not hurt their marriage.

“Ratings for satisfaction with affairs was high – sexual satisfaction and emotional satisfaction,” Selterman explained. “And feelings of regret were low. These findings paint a more complicated picture of infidelity compared to what we thought we knew.”
Lack of love, anger towards a spouse, and fundamental relationship issues were the least-cited reasons the respondents have affairs, according to the study.
“People have a diversity of motivations to cheat,” Selterman said, adding the team didn’t see “solid evidence” that people’s affairs were linked with lower quality or satisfaction in their marriages.
“Sometimes they’ll cheat even if their relationships are pretty good.”
