Q: Hey there, Gary, I remember you have a Prius? I always complained when I got behind one, and still do! I did not buy one, but did join the electric car revolution. Mine provides transportation, not a lot of thrill, but saving over $500 a month is pretty cool. My wife, Susan, is saving $300 each month, too, with hers. That’s over $800 a month we’re saving!
I’ve been an ICE car owner (internal combustion engine) all my life. As a car collector, I decided to join the revolution with an electric car that goes over 340 miles before a charge. Believe me, the change was not easy! It is hard to believe all the technology cars have today with wipers that go on when water hits them, cars that park themselves, sensors that are aware of everything around you and, of course, self-driving vehicles. I feel I am doing my part and politicians need to join the 21st century. I still have my ICE cars with the sound of thunder, which will never go away.

Q: Once again, we have the no turn on red sign at the Interstate 680 off-ramp at Alum Rock Avenue.
Can you use the influence of your high office to point out to the powers that be that a 24/7 no turn on red makes no sense? As before, it will be torn down by frustrated residents of the area or defaced to effectively negate it. Assuming the data indicate it serves a purpose during peak hours, make it no turn on red for those peak hours. As a user of this off-ramp several times a day, it makes absolutely no sense to sit through a rather long cycle before I get a green light at 8 p.m., or any off-peak time.
I confess that late at night, I look carefully for any police in sight, and make a right turn on red, like hundreds of others. This is common sense to save money and reduce pollution and the situation here should not encourage breaking the law.

A: The sign was installed by Caltrans as this intersection is within their right of way. They installed it because of a traffic fatality that occurred at this intersection in March 2022, as well as a trend of crashes involving right-turning cars from that off-ramp.
