There’s a chance that arguably the greatest basketball player of all time hangs it up after this season.
LeBron James just wrapped up his 20th NBA season and it may have been his last after he hinted that he could retire this summer. The hint came during the Lakers’ post-game press conference after they got swept by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals.
After James spoke to the media, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin spoke to someone close to James who gave a few reasons as to why James is considering retirement.
“I spoke to a source close to LeBron after I walked out of the arena, and I told him what LeBron had just told me, and he kind of walked through the playoffs with me, he’s like, ‘Man, LeBron really felt the effects of the travel and the physicality in the first round against Memphis,’ then he said, ‘The second round against Golden State brought back some old demons about all those finals matchups they had that LeBron was on the losing side on a few of them and that was an emotional toll that it took on him, but then you get through Golden State, and you feel like you’ve had everything you had to give, you left it on the court against the Denver Nuggets, and you still get swept,” McMenamin said.
This does make sense but James has shown time and time again that he still has it. He finished this season averaging 24.5 points and 10 rebounds per game while helping the Lakers win two playoff rounds.
He also has said he wants to play with his son Bronny and he won’t be able to do that if he calls it.
