South Bay native Jacqui Naylor will showcase new album with 6 SF shows

Saratoga native Jacqui Naylor’s versatility as a jazz and pop singer came in really handy when she recorded her latest album, “The Long Game,” released earlier this year. Her fans — and they known to be a dedicated bunch — were invited to help select the album’s songs, and did they ever have some interesting and wide-ranging suggestions.

The album includes tunes penned by David Bowie (“Space Oddity”), Peter Gabriel (“Don’t Give Up”) and even Kurt Weill and Ogden Nash (“Speak Low”), as well as several tunes written by Naylor and her longtime collaborator Art Khu.

The album also features the technique Naylor calls “acoustic smashing,” in which she blends the tune and lyrics of a jazz standard with the rhythmic foundation of rock or pop song. That happens on her cover the Coldplay song “Fix You” that incorporates elements of Miles Davis’ “It Never Entered My Mind.”

Naylor, who has earned comparisons to everyone from Cassandra Wilson to Shawn Colvin, will showcase the album during a homecoming mini-residency this weekend at SFJAZZ Center, during which she’ll perform two different shows a night.

She’ll be joined on stage by Khu on guitar and piano, drummer John Jones and bassist Geoff Brennan.

Details: 7 and 8:30 p.m. Nov. 26-27, 6 and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 28; Joe Henderson Lab at SFJAZZ Center; proof of vaccination required and a mask must be worn in the venue; $30-$35; www.sfjazz.org.
