The 51-year-old Avengers star was seriously hurt when he was run over by his own snowcat after using it to free a vehicle driven by a family member that became stuck in a bank of snow on New Year’s Day, Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said Tuesday.

“At this point in the investigation … we believe this is a tragic accident,” the sheriff said. “He was being a great neighbour and he was plowing those roads for his neighbours.”

The accident left the actor “completely crushed” by the machine with TMZ reporting that Renner’s chest collapsed and his upper torso was mangled under the nearly 14,500-pound plow.

Renner was reportedly heard moaning in the background of the 911 call and was having “extreme difficulty” breathing.

The two-time Academy Award-nominated actor posted a message from his hospital bed on Tuesday thanking fans for their support.

“Thank you all for your kind words,” it said. “[I’m] too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.”

Renner’s spokesperson has said he is “making positive progress,” adding: “Jeremy is awake, talking and in good spirits. He remains in ICU in critical but stable condition.

“He is overwhelmed by the showing of love and support. The family asks for your continued thoughts while he heals with his close loved ones.”

In his update to media, Sheriff Balaam said Renner had used his snowplow to help dig out his own car, which was driven by another family member, after it had become stranded in the snow.

“After successfully towing his personal vehicle from its stuck location, Mr. Renner got out of his (snowcat) to speak to his family member,” Balaam said. “The Pistenbully started to roll. In an effort to stop (it), Mr. Renner attempts to climb back into the driver’s seat. It’s at this point that Mr. Renner is run over.”
