But where is the best spot for British tourists to holiday in Spain?

For many Britons, a Spanish holiday means sun, sand and sea at a beautiful beach destination.

Spain has the most Blue Flag beaches in the world making it a fantastic spot for any British beach lover.

The Blue Flag is only awarded to beaches that are sustainable, safe and accessible as well as beautiful.

Although Spain has 614 Blue Flag beaches, a couple of Spanish regions punch above their weight.

The stunning municipality of Orihuela in the Alicante Costa Blanca region has a whopping 11 Blue Flag beaches.

About 20km outside of the main city, Orihuela Costa has 16km of coastline offering a huge range of activities for families and couples.

Playa Cala Capitan is one of Orihuela’s gorgeous Blue Flag beaches and is a great choice for families.

One visitor from Manchester said on Tripadvisor: “The best beach in the area. Soft clean sand, safe swimming and a good beach bar with decent toilets.”

Another visitor from Chester said: “Fabulous beach and very clean too. Beach bar was great, the coffee and food were excellent.

“Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff too, it’s a thumbs up.”

A visitor from London said: “Also a very shallow section of water with hardly any waves suitable for toddlers.”

The “tranquil” Playa de la Zenia in Orihuela has also been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag award.

A visitor this January said: “Tranquil and peaceful. The smaller bay was a real suntrap and sheltered from the wind.

“The main beach was very tranquil with people enjoying the warm weather. Both beaches had soft clean sand and great views.”

British tourists can fly to Alicante from most major UK airports with budget airlines offering deals.

British tourists will need to be fully vaccinated to travel to Spain for a holiday, while children under 12 are currently exempt.
