Spanish holidays under threat as even MORE Covid restrictions to be introduced

SPAIN is set to introduce more Covid restrictions from this weekend, causing a headache for Brits with holiday plans.

Two more islands have been upgraded to Covid alert Level 4 as authorities try to reduce the spread of Omicron.

La Palma and Gran Canaria have been moved to the highest level of Covid alert due to rising cases.

The two islands are currently both on Level 3, but from Saturday, January 22, they will be moved to alert Level 4, the country’s Health Minister has confirmed.

According to local media: “The Ministry adopts this extraordinary decision after the Public Health report that warns of the increases in the occupation of beds, both conventional and ICU, which have risen to very high risk in Gran Canaria. 

“In La Palma they are at high risk in occupancy of conventional beds and at very low risk in ICU beds.”

Under Level 4 rules, beaches are limited to 50 per cent capacity and appointments may be required for people who want to visit the beach.

A maximum of six people can meet up indoors or outdoors and Covid passports must be shown to get inside all establishments.

Pubs and restaurants have to close at midnight – in a move that will be a huge disappointment to many Brits heading on their holidays.

Capacity levels have been cut to 75 per cent outdoors and 33 per cent indoors to avoid superspreader events.

Public transport capacity has also been cut to 75 per cent.

Tenerife is also on the highest alert level while Lanzarote and Fuerteventura remain on Level 3 and El Hierro and La Gomera are still on Level 2.

Brits can currently visit Spain, although all arrivals aged 12 and over must be fully vaccinated to enter Spain.

The increasing restrictions have been slammed for damaging the Spanish tourism industry, as thousands of Brits cancelled holidays in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
