Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Writer and producer Phil Lord has revealed details of a post-credits scene that almost capped off Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Speaking with IndieWire, Lord revealed that the initial plan was to introduce The Bar with No Name, a secret venue where supervillains like to hang out, to the world of the Spider-Verse, with The Spot suffering further humiliation while trying to get a drink.
“And then he finally steals the drink for himself and he pours it down and it all leaks out of his holes. He’s the dorkiest villain. A great line that Chris wrote, though: ‘Trying to fill a hole in his heart with more holes.’ Not a great method.”
Of course, while The Spot begins his villainous career as the D-list, joke of a bad guy that many Marvel fans know and love, come the end of the movie, he has become one of the greatest threats that the multiverse has ever faced. And a post-credits scene would have shown The Spot use his newfound power to get his revenge. As Alan Hawkins, head of character animation explains…
“That was one of my favorite things, seeing this guy get picked on and then come back and, with just a whisper, demolishes every person that comes at him. But you have to have both of those sequences for that to work.”
While it would certainly have been exciting to see several Spider-Man villains gathered together at The Bar with No Name, and surely terrifying to see The Spot destroy it, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse instead ends with an intense cliffhanger. And, according to Lord, it was simply too “Hard to beat where we left off.”
No doubt we can all agree they made the right choice.
The Spot Will Continue His Villainy in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse
Now that The Spot has become a multiversal abyss rather than the black-and-white clown he is at the start of the story, audiences can only wonder what threat he might pose when Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse lands in theaters next year. “The Spot is an interesting villain because he seems like a joke, but when you really look at his powers, there’s incredible potential,” co-director Kemp Powers said of The Spot and his role in both Across and Beyond the Spider-Verse. “His ability to open portals across dimensions sets him up perfectly for the Spider-Verse…He’s the villain of the next two films… and let’s just say that the Spot and Miles are connected in surprising ways.”
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse meanwhile finds Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy encountering a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But, when Miles clashes with their leader, Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099, on how to handle a new threat, he finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must soon redefine what it means to be a hero, so he can save the people he loves most.
Starring Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, Daniel Kaluuya, Mahershala Ali, and Oscar Isaac, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is out now in theaters, with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse scheduled to be released on March 29, 2024.
