WARNING: This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse from the start.
Directors Kemp Powers, Joaquim Dos Santos, and Justin K. Thompson have teased the continued journey of Miles Morales in next year’s animated sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Speaking with Variety, Powers revealed how Miles will react to the situation he finds himself in come the end of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, with the superhero coming face-to-face with an alternate, evil version of himself after being sent to the wrong universe.
“It was really important to have this thing where Miles wants to save his dad, but then he’s faced with this Pottersville version of a world that was created because of this thing that happened to him. It’s not going to be as simple as him wanting to just escape this world. He’s going to try and do right by people who feel he’s done wrong by, and that just felt more potentially emotional and unpredictable as we go into the third film. It complicates his mission in a way that we hope people find unexpected and also thrilling.”
Landing on Earth-42 instead of his own Earth-1610, the end of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse finds our Miles staring down a version of himself who, without the responsibilities of being Spider-Man, has instead become his universe’s version of supervillain The Prowler.
While we have all been left wondering how Miles will escape and get back to his rightful home, Powers suggest that the hero will continue to live up to the legacy of Spider-Man, sticking around in Earth-42 to fight to put things right.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Could Include More ‘Sliding Doors’ Moments
Co-director Joaquim Dos Santos goes on to suggest that there could be further “sliding doors” moments in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse thanks to the vast creative opportunities provided by the multiverse.
“The multiverse provides us with these sort of sliding doors. It allows us to ask these questions like the head games you play with yourself: ‘If I had done this, instead of that, what happens? How does my life turn out?’ You get to see those things play out on screen.”
Could we see more alternate versions of Miles Morales in the sequel beyond just The Prowler? Perhaps all the other versions of the character become evil without the influence of his father? Truly, the possibilities are endless, and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse cannot come quickly enough.
Miles Morales is currently busy reuniting with Gwen Stacy and encountering a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. But, when Miles clashes with their leader, Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099, on how to handle a new threat, he finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must soon redefine what it means to be a hero, so he can save the people he loves most.
Starring Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, Daniel Kaluuya, Mahershala Ali, and Oscar Isaac, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is out now in theaters, with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse scheduled to be released on March 29, 2024.
