Are Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home or not? Well, some newly released promo art for the Marvel sequel may have spoiled an appearance from the former. The official promotional material provided by a bank in Indonesia appears to show two Spider-Men battling Jamie Foxx’s Electro. While one of them is sure to be Tom Holland’s MCU iteration, many believe the other can only be Tobey Maguire’s web-slinger, last seen in 2007’s Spider-Man 3.
The potential inclusion of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s respective Spider-Men comes as a result of the shenanigans which occur following the outing of Peter Parker’s identity by Mysterio during the finale of 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Thus, Spider-Man: No Way Home picks up immediately after, with Peter’s life and reputation having now been turned upside down, leading him to ask his friend and colleague Doctor Strange to help restore his secret identity with magic. Of course, things quickly go awry, breaking open the madness of the multiverse and allowing supervillains from alternate realities who have previously fought a variant of Spider-Man to arrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
These returning villains include the likes of Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus and Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man franchise, Jamie Foxx as Electro from director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Thomas Haden Church as The Sandman and Rhys Ifans as The Lizard, leading to the hottest rumor of the year, which claims that both Maguire and Garfield will appear during the Spider-Man: No Way Home finale and assist Tom Holland in battling this mob of bad guys.
Of course, while the suit in the image certainly looks a lot like Maguire’s, it could just as easily be Holland’s iteration of the iconic wall-crawler, with the image perhaps confirming instead that his version of Peter Parker will be multiplied by his pal Doctor Strange. It’s also worth noting again that, while Tobey Maguire has not suffered an onslaught of questions regarding his Spider-Man return, Andrew Garfield has, and he has denied such suggestions every single time. “This is about this Spider-Men photoshop thing that we talked about on Jimmy Fallon,” The Amazing Spider-Man star said recently. “Listen, at this point… I’m done. We’ll all find out when the movie comes out. And we’ll either be very disappointed, or we’ll be very happy, or someone will say, ‘I told you so,’ another person will say, ‘I told you so.’ We’ll all find out. I’m sorry in advance.”
Directed by Jon Watts and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: No Way Home will be the 27th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man alongside Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Marisa Tomei, J. B. Smoove, and Benedict Wong. Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 17, 2021, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
