Spider-Man No Way Home Review: Story

Starting from the same frame as Spider-Man: Far From Home’s shocking post-credits, with Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) revealing Spider-identity Man’s as Peter Parker (Holland) through The Daily Bugle’s J. Jonah Jameson (J. K. Simmons is still as delightfully rambunctious as ever! ), Peter’s life takes a drastic turn, and his close ones – Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), best After being rejected by his dream college, Peter seeks the assistance of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who reluctantly agrees to assist Parker.

Alas! As teased in the many, many Disney+ shows that debuted in 2021, Peter’s age comes into play, and a misspell summons in the uncharted territories of the dreaded multiverse. All cards are suddenly on the table, and everyone who has a grudge against Spider-Man goes after Peter Parker from the MCU. Parker has a change of heart and tries to help the bad guys while Strange tries to untangle the mess.

But, as the saying goes, you should be careful what you wish for! More than that, I won’t be able to say because it would detract from the thrill of watching it in a movie theatre.

Spider-Man No Way Home Review: Performances

The hero is very much Spider-Man in this case, and Tom Holland deserves a lot of credit for Peter’s emotional maturity, as we’re constantly reminded that he’s just a teenager entrusted with being the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Furthermore, his relationships serve as a motif, keeping him going and thus propelling the story forward without becoming stale.

May’s community principles infused in him, whether it was through his youthful love for MJ, Ned’s unwavering loyalty, or, more importantly, Ned’s undying loyalty. Tom carries the weight of a beloved superhero deftly, oscillating between the end of one story and the impending start of another.

With every hero, there must be a villain, and as one mega bad guy after another butt heads with Peter, you can’t help but feel giddy like a child. While Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin doesn’t miss a beat, Jamie Foxx as Electro is a quirky delight in his own right, and Alfred Molina as Dr. Octopus is a hilarious delight in his own right.

What’s also fascinating is how each villain has their “Paul Rudd” ageless game dialed in as you’re transported back to previous Spider-Man iterations. Doctor Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, is entrusted with the MCU’s comic fillers, and he delivers on a grand sarcastic note. While Marisa finally gets her chance to break free from a stereotype, Zendaya and Jacob are the perfect foils, bringing their real-life conflicts with Tom to the big screen as a comedy.

Spider-Man No Way Home Review: Direction, Screenplay & Action

Jon Watts has done a commendable job again in terms of direction. Jon Watts has made sure of plenty of fan service without losing sight of the story. What also distinguishes Spider-Man: No Way Home from previous films is how realistic the action sequences are, which says a lot given that we’re dealing with superheroes.

Whether it’s Peter and Strange’s battle in the mirror dimension or Parker and the Green Goblin’s hard-hitting fight. Mauro Fiore’s cinematography shines brightly in these action sequences, which are expertly crafted by Darren Gilford and Clint Wallace’s production design.

Editors Jeffrey Ford and Leigh Folsom Boyd do an admirable job weaving the larger-than-life (pun intended!) multiversal aspect into the two-and-a-half-hour run time. Jon Watts is able to bring the Homecoming series to a satisfying conclusion while giving a righteous tease on what’s to come, thanks to Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers’ layered script.
