Well, it’s coming. Long talked about, little seen, the upcoming S650-generation is in its testing stages, and new spy photos hint at a few key details about the refreshed model—namely that, like the fifth- to sixth-generation Camaro, this successor will be more evolutionary than revolutionary, with the skin looking at least a little familiar.

There is a lot of camouflage on this test mule, which wears EPA-spec exhaust tipes, suggesting it’s collecting emissions data. But even with all the excess padding, it’s apparent the next-gen ‘Stang will keep the current S550 car’s general dimensions, as well as its long hood, short truck, and blunt nose.
Speaking of the tips under the rear bumper, there seem to be four, though on this prototype they’re collected back into two for the sake of the aforementioned EPA testing.
The black wheels on the outside – as well as the steering wheel inside – are likely spares pulled from the parts box and are just placeholders used during testing. We don’t expect the 2024 Mustang to wear rims that so closely mirror a current GT’s, nor for Ford to come right out the gate with a Bullitt edition, despite the badge over top of the airbag.

Heavy camo on the rest of the interior keeps us from gleaning much more info than that about the cabin, too. Ford’s playing this one close to the chest.
What we can tell you is that the S650-gen Mustang should debut in model year 2024, which is about one year later than the Blue Oval was originally hoping to launch it. Like we said above, even though this will be a new generation of pony car, don’t be surprised if the exterior updates are subtle—the big changes here are likely more than skin-deep.
