Spied! What’s this oddball VW Aero B Sedan spotted in the Alps?

Every major automaker in the world is sinking gazillions of dollars into the development of all-electric vehicles, and Volkswagen is no different. Our shutterbugs have spied VW engineers in the Austrian Alps testing what is likely to become, for all intents and purposes, a Passat EV.

Talking heads are insisting this model will be called the “Aero B” when it begins production in the 2023 calendar year, despite most of the company’s all-electric range falling under its spellcheck-vexing “ID” banner.

Whatever its moniker, expect the four-door sedan to ride on VW’s MEB electric car platform, a set of bones on which the ID.4 and ID.5 crossover-type vehicles are built. This means there will likely be a single-motor rear-wheel-drive option, plus an AWD dual-motor machine with a performance bent.

Range? Battery size? Expect it to have slightly more of both than one of its other platform mates, the ID.3. That machine has a maximum battery capacity of 77 kWh and range of 544 km (according to the WLTP rating scheme, which can provide higher estimates than the EPA test that offers a closer approximation for real-world North American drivers). The Aero B could have a battery packing 84 kWh of juice, good for a (WLTP) range of 696 kilometres.

Will this type of machine make it to this side of the pond? Our Driving Magic 8-Ball encourages us to ‘ask again later’. Sedans aren’t exactly the most popular of body styles in North America, and VW has wisely plowed plenty of R&D into its SUV and crossover side of the showroom. Still, there’s an appetite for vehicles like the Tesla Model S and Polestar 2, so perhaps we shouldn’t dismiss the Aero B completely.

Our own Justin Pritchard sampled the VW ID.4 in the wilds of northern Ontario, citing the MEB architecture as solid and strong while calling the overall package an “easy vehicle to like.” Whether the Aero B shows up here or not, there’s an excellent chance you’ll see an all-electric VW of some sort on your daily commute in the near future.
