Last week, Michigan State student John Hao was shot on campus. He was unfortunately left paralyzed from the waist down.
After reading about Hao’s story, 76ers star James Harden sent him game-worn sneakers, contributed to his GoFundMe page and sent him words of encouragement over the phone.
“I know it’s tough right now but you have to stay physically strong you know what I mean? You just gotta think positive things,” Harden told Hao. “I got some gifts for you, too. I got some things coming your way to hopefully give you some encouragement and make you smile. Let me know if you need anything else.”
Harden gave Hao his phone number and told him they will FaceTime again soon.
Basketball fans around the country are applauding Harden for this act of kindness.
“This is awesome stuff from Harden,” one fan said.
“Bigger than basketball,” another fan tweeted.
“Much respect to Harden,” a Twitter user wrote.
According to ESPN’s Malika Andrews, the former MVP is hopeful that Hao will be able to attend one of his future games.
Kudos to Harden for stepping up and being a true role model.
