Brittney Griner’s WNBA coach was not happy with the crowd for the opening game of the 2023 season.
The Phoenix Mercury opened the year on the road against the Los Angeles Sparks. While the crowd was impressive at Crypto.com Arena, it was not a sellout.
Griner and Co. played in front of about 10,000 fans.
“I mean, it was great. But like honestly, c’mon now LA. We didn’t sell out the arena for BG? Like, I expected more, you know, to be honest. Right, it was great, it was loud. But how was it not a sellout? How was it not a sellout,” Vanessa Nygaard said after the game.
She clearly was not happy.

Sports fans are weighing in, too.
“The country is tired of identity politics specially in sports,” one fan wrote.
“Related: Why have most WNBA teams moved from NBA arenas to much smaller capacity facilities?” one fan added.
“Why don’t we get paid the same as the men…” one fan added.
“She really expected 20k for a WNBA game? The sport has been in the red for its entire existence. The athletes are great but it draws what 5k per game? 10k tops?” another fan wrote.
What do you make of the crowd?
