The NBA has fined the team $750,000 for what it deems “conduct detrimental to the league” in a game against the Bulls.
The NBA’s statement says that the Mavericks were in violation of the league’s player resting policy and “demonstrated through actions and public statements the organization’s desire to lose the game” in order to preserve its first-round pick in this year’s draft.
The NBA’s executive vice president of basketball operations Joe Dumars says that the Mavericks’ actions “undermined the integrity of our sport.”
The sports world is reacting to the news of the punishment.
“Should’ve fined them more,” one fan said.

“Gonna fine the Portland Trail Blazers next?,” one fan asked. “Mavs were maybe more shameless in this one game, but Portland did it for a month or whatever.”

“Let me ask that you take a look at the Blazers, Jazz, Spurs just to name a few that did the same either down the stretch or the entire season long,” another fan noted.
Mavs fined 750K for “tanking”, sure that’s fine. @NBA let me ask that you take a look at the Blazers, Jazz, Spurs just to name a few that did the same either down the stretch or the entire season long ???? https://t.co/qOSMAJAwNw

The Mavericks’ loss to the Bulls on April 7 eliminated them from playoff or play-in contention, and allowed them to retain their first-round draft pick.
