The Dallas Mavericks raised some eyebrows with their decision to intentionally rest most of their starters for their penultimate game against the Chicago Bulls. But among those raised eyebrows was the NBA itself – and the association didn’t like what they saw.
According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, NBA spokesman Mike Bass has announced that the association has begun an investigation into the Mavs’ roster decisions and game conduct. Specifically, they’re looking to see what the “motivations behind those actions” were – most likely to determine if the Mavs intentionally tanked the game.
“The NBA commenced an investigation today into the facts and circumstances surrounding the Dallas Mavericks’ roster decisions and game conduct with respect to last night’s Chicago Bulls-Mavericks game, including the motivations behind those actions,” Bass said.
NBA fans weren’t at all amused by the Mavs’ actions. Some think that the league should punish them in some way, while others have noted that the league hasn’t exactly investigated all teams equally in cases of potential tanking.
For the integrity of the game, Cuban has to get maximum fine. NBA should give the fine money back to the fans who were in attendance last night. https://t.co/HgjHWkcYlT

“We’ve decided to award the Mavericks the 11th pick in the NBA Draft and reduce their odds of landing Victor Wembanyama to 0.0%” would be the appropriate punishment. https://t.co/BwzRx6olHT

They should throw the full extent of the law at the Mavs, and remove their next 15 first round picks https://t.co/JgQnDM606Q

The Mavericks’ first-round pick is protected from a trade to the New York Knicks only if it’s top 10 protected. With that loss, the pick is now in top 10 range and out of the Knicks’ reach.
It’s a devious strategy for a team that was already hard-pressed to make the playoffs, let alone make a deep run in the playoffs.
But that’s also a big no-no from the NBA, who have been determined to stamp out all forms of tanking.
It’ll be interesting to see what this “investigation” yields.
