Spreading its wings: SAA starts up flights to Mauritius next month

Amid the current turbulence which SAA is experiencing due to wage disagreements and a rocky restart with a thinned-down route network, the national carrier has announced it will be adding Mauritius to its international route network in November.

SAA HEADS TO MAURITIUS

SAA’s first flight to the Indian Ocean Island will be just three weeks before South Africa’s award-winning independently owned budget carrier Flysafair launches flights to the island.

According to Business Insider, SAA is also offering some of the cheapest fares available on the route. Flights between Johannesburg and Mauritius will be operated twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays.

SAA’S REDUCED FLIGHT SCHEDULES

After relaunching domestic flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town on 23 September 2021, South African Airways was forced to make significant changes to its revised international schedule.

The airline announced that it was cutting frequencies on its Kinshasa and Lusaka routes, as well as delaying the relaunch of flights to Maputo, to December.

STILL NO SIGN OF EQUITY PARTNER

The Takatso Consortium is set to take a 51% shareholding in South African Airways – and pump billions into the relaunched national airline. The deal has still not been finalised, which means Takatso is not currently involved in any SAA operations.

Operating without its promised equity partner, SAA is experiencing various challenges including the current wage strike by members of its cabin crew.
