Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard once tried to persuade a former England teammate to join him at Anfield.
The player in question was Bobby Zamora, who made his debut for the Three Lions against Hungary in 2010.
Gerrard, who netted twice in the match as the Three Lions ran out victorious, securing a 2-1 win, did, in fact, try to persuade Zamora to join his beloved club.
It was the same season Roy Hodgson took over as Reds manager after replacing the sacked Rafael Benitez.
Zamora had found the net 19 times across all competitions during the season and had previously helped Fulham reach the Europa League final.
“I should have probably gone to Liverpool from Fulham,” Zamora told the Under the Cosh podcast.
“Roy [Hodgson] went to Liverpool. They bid and Spurs bid at the same time, £10 million the pair of them.
“When I played for England, my first game against Hungary, I get in the lift with my best pal and Stevie G, and Stevie G goes, ‘Mate, f***ing brilliant today, well done. Would you come to Liverpool?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah’ … so he said, ‘I’ll speak to Roy’.
“I’d just had my girls. Mark Hughes was like, ‘You’re going to be my key man, I need you, we’ll give you new a deal.’ I don’t know why, but I said, ‘Yeah OK’.
“But yeah, I probably should have gone to Liverpool. Regardless of the fact Roy didn’t do great there. I should have got five years at Liverpool. You can’t hit a few branches coming down from there.”
After penning a new contract at Craven Cottage in May 2010, the forward later broke his foot in a challenge with teammate Karl Henry.
He would later join Queens Park Rangers, helping them return to the Premier League.
The striker netted the all-important goal in the play-off final and went on to make 96 appearances for QPR.
Zamora would end up finishing with a second spell back at Brighton, which capped off a stellar career, having managed a total of 506 appearances netting 143 goals.
