This is not a drill: season two of Squid Game is actually happening! The show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that a follow-up to the Netflix phenomenon is in the works to the Associated Press at a screening and Q&A in Los Angeles.

He said (via Variety): “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! […] But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently.”

He also added that Lee Jung-jae will return as main character Seong Gi-hun. Exciting!

The rumour about the second season first staring doing the rounds on Twitter, with fans speculating that Hwang Dong-hyuk was planning a follow-up.

Speaking to The Korean Times, Hwang seemed to confirm the rumour, saying, “After about 12 years, the world has changed into a place where such peculiar, violent survival stories are actually welcomed.” While his social commentary is spookily accurate, we can’t help but think about when we’re going to get a second series of the mega-hit. Surely it’s not another ten years away?

Released on 17 September 2021, the nine-episode Korean thriller has been described by Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarando as the streaming platform’s “biggest show ever,” and according to Flix Patrol, it’s the number one show in 82 of the 83 countries it’s available in. Impressive stuff.

We all know that Netflix have a great track-record of renewing hugely successful shows (hello Emily in Paris), so fingers crossed we get a sequel to Squid Game soon! Until then, here’s everything we know about a potential second season so far:

What’s been said about Squid Game season 2?

The director of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk said to Variety, “I don’t have well developed plans for Squid Game 2. It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.”

He continued, “It took me six months to write and rewrite the first two episodes. Then I consulted verbally with friends, and picked up clues for improvements through my own pitching and from their responses.”

What will Squid Game season 2 be about?

Spoiler alert! Season one ended with Gi-hun defying the odds and winning the game. However, he soon discovers that – despite the game’s creator dying – the competition is still recruiting. Perhaps Gi-hun will devote his time in the second season to ending the brutal competition once and for all?

Speaking about the first season, Hwang told The Korean Times, “Making the story into the series was still an adventure, just as it was about a decade ago. I knew that it would be all or nothing; either a masterpiece or a quirky flop. The idea behind this work was very experimental. So I would keep on asking myself if audiences will find it convincing that the characters are risking their lives to play children’s games.”

Who will star in Squid Game season 2?

I mean, considering that nearly everyone died in the first season (apart from Seong Gi-Hun), we can probably expect a lot of newbies.

Is there a release date for Squid Game season 2?

We haven’t got a release date (yet) but in the meantime here’s ten series, which are similar to Squid Game that you can binge in the meantime:
