Squid Game Season 2 to Begin Filming This Year, 2024 Release Date Likely

The next round of Squid Game is finally gearing up to get started.

Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae has revealed when the second season of the hit Netflix series will finally begin filming—giving us clues as to when it might finally grace our screens. Speaking with allkpop.com, the actor revealed that Squid Game Season 2 is currently on track to begin filming later this year, in the summer to be more precise, and thinks it may all take a little longer to complete when compared with the first outing.

“Anyways, ‘Squid Game 2’ will begin filming in the summer and the filming will likely last for about 10 months. We were working on season 1 for about 10 months as well, but that was with delays caused by COVID-19. But seeing as season 2 will be bigger in scale, it will probably take longer to complete.”

If filming is due to commence in the summer, this would likely give Squid Game Season 2 a 2024 release, meaning we still have a little while to wait for round two. To placate us, however, Lee Jung-jae does offer some insight into what the second season will involve: vengeance.

“It’s probably safe to assume that. As we all saw at the end of season 1, the main plot of season 2 will be revenge, and the key figure who controlled the workings of the games in season 1 was Lee Byung-hun sunbae, so it seems that the two of us will be the central figures of this next story. This is the first time that I’ll be working with Lee Byung-hun sunbae, actually. Well, we worked on a drama called ‘White Nights 3.98’ back in the day, but we didn’t have any scenes together.”

Released back in September 2021 to mass acclaim, the first season of Squid Game centers on a contest in which 456 players, drawn from different walks of life but each deeply in debt, play a set of children’s games with deadly consequences in the hopes of winning a 45.6 billion Won prize. The series quickly became a pop culture phenomenon, receiving many award nominations, including 14 nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards and walking away with the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

Details of what the second season of Squid Game will involve have been dripping through slowly for some time. The series will see the return of the mysterious Front Man, played by I Saw the Devil and G.I. Joe: Retaliation star Lee Byung-hun, revealing more of what makes the masked man tick. “While I was writing season one, I thought about the stories that could be in season two if I get to do one – one would be the story of the Frontman,” revealed creator Hwang Dong-hyuk.

The series will continue the social commentary as well, taking aim at the police. “I think the issue with police officers is not just an issue in Korea. I see it on the global news that the police force can be very late on acting on things – there are more victims or a situation gets worse because of them not acting fast enough,” Dong-hyuk continued. “This was an issue that I wanted to raise. Maybe in season two I can talk about this more.”

Of course, there will be more games, which promise to be both new, and even more dramatic. Here’s hoping our nerves can take it.
