The first ODI at the same venue saw Ibrahim Zadran score a run-a-ball 98 to seal Afghanistan’s win while chasing down 269 with 19 balls to spare. Rahmat Shah, who shone in the last Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan series too, played the second fiddle with a knock of 55.
Afghanistan achieved the win without their star player Rashid Khan while skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi also contributed 38 runs. Among Afghan bowlers, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Fareed Ahmad took two wickets each while young Afghan spinner Noor Ahmed proved too costly while bowling a spell of 1/66 (8 overs).
For Sri Lanka, Charith Asalanka scored a 95-ball 91 to take the hosts to a respectable total while Dhananjaya de Silva played the supporting role of 51 runs off 59 balls. Pathum Nissanka scored a steady 38 while the remaining of the Lankan top order struggled.
Among Lankan bowlers, Kasun Rajitha took two wickets while Matheesha Pathirana had a dull debut, giving away 66 runs in 8.5 overs. Crucially, pacer Lahiru Kumara was injured while bowling his fifth over and could be out for the next game. An update is awaited.
Sri Lanka are currently preparing for the World Cup qualifiers, starting later this month in Zimbabwe. Afghanistan have already qualified by virtue of rankings as the top eight teams from the ICC rankings qualified for the tournament directly.
