Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka dominated the group and the Super Six stages by winning all the nine matches they played so far, including five matches in the Super Six to seal the World Cup, slated in India in October-November in style.
The Netherlands, on the other hand, edged out Scotland on the final day by virtue of superior run rate as Bas de Leede’s century, followed by a five-wicket haul, helped the Dutch to claim the second and last available spot after both sides were locked on six points each. It was actually a three-prong battle as hosts Zimbabwe finished fourth at the stage with six points as well.
The final will be a mere formality as both sides will join the top eight sides in the group stages where all 10 nations will face off in a single group in a round-robin format. At the end of the group stage, four teams will qualify for the knockout stages beginning with the semis.
The Netherlands, who confirmed their participation in the quadrennial event on the final day, crucially defeated West Indies in the Super Six stages as the match went into the Super Over following a tie. Logan Van Beek starred in the game as he scored 30 runs in the one-over showdown.
