Star sign cocktails: Astrology-themed drinks put to the test

“What’s your sun, moon and rising?”

It’s a question you could hear anywhere from a dance floor to a dating app these days, and refers to the “big three” in astrology — the planetary movements that govern our core personality, according to our birth charts.

Whether the mere mention of star signs makes you roll your eyes or you won’t get out of bed without first checking your daily horoscope, there’s no denying the pulling power of the zodiac for many.

And star signs have become one of the cleverest marketing strategies to dominate the past decade, with jewellery, apparel and homewares flying off the shelves just by bearing the emblem of Leo, Pisces or Aquarius.

It’s likely down to the personal nature of feeling “seen” that explains the trend.

Now Perth basement bar Goody Two’s has made the ingenious move to devise a cocktail menu dedicated to the 12 signs, Star Sign Sips, which has taken the hallmarks of Capricorns, Geminis, Cancers and the rest and translated them into martinis.

The drinks are $20 a pop but come down to $15 on Fridays, with all astrology junkies invited to see if their tastebuds align with their bespoke blend.

Sagittarius – Ume Martini

You can pick a Sagittarius from a mile away.

They are the ones frantically packing a suitcase for a last-minute travel plan, dreaming up a wild adventure to rope their mates into, and firing arrows of blunt truth in the way only expert archers can. The fact I fall into this constellation is the definition of a bullseye hit.

With change the only constant for dear Sag, it’s no surprise I was curious to try every cocktail from the menu, but the Ume Martini with Japanese plum wine and gin was a whimsical starting point with its floral garnish.

More intriguing for me were the drinks with a bit of heat to them (blame being a fire sign), so the Pear and Jalapeno Martini for Aries and Spicy Margarita for Scorpio beckoned with flaming talons.

The latter was one of the best I have tried, with a spiciness that radiates across your entire palate and requires a break between sips to recover.

Virgo – Dirty Martini

With Beyonce the most famous Virgo, it likely comes as no surprise that we’re a notoriously diligent *cough* control freak *cough* bunch of perfectionists who thrive when we have a schedule or plan in place and enjoy dolling ourselves up.

There are few drinks more classically aesthetic — or hardworking (two sips and you’re already tipsy) — than a dirty martini so this hit the brief.

We also have extremely high standards, and this strong and salty concoction with a solo olive met mine, plus any drink with something edible gets extra points.

Taurus – Chocolate Martini

As a textbook Taurus with not only my sun in the fierce earth sign but my moon, Saturn, Venus, Mercury and Jupiter, too, I’m not afraid to tell it how it is. There will be no sugar coating my opinions here.

Taureans value pleasure and lavish experiences. We’re all about that luxurious lifestyle so it’s only fitting for our cocktail to fall in the “sensuous sipper” category with smooth and indulgently rich flavours. The Chocolate Martini is full on but in the best way (like we are).

Honestly, I don’t think it is palatable for everyone because the flavour is spectacularly strong, much like our opinions, but if you like a hard-hitting drink, this is for you.

The flavour lasts as long (figuratively) as the late Taurean Queen Elizabeth II did on the throne.
