Some big cuts were made at Paramount+ last week. Along with three other shows – Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, The Game, and Queen of the Universe – the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy was given the boot at Paramount+. Previously, the show had been renewed for a second season at the streaming platform, which is now in post-production. However, the cancelation means that season 2 won’t be coming to the streamer after all, and worse yet, the first season is also set to be pulled from streaming.
Brothers Dan and Kevin Hageman are the creators of the show, which is the first animated Star Trek geared primarily toward younger children. The two shared a statement on their official Twitter account addressing the news that Star Trek: Prodigy had been axed at Paramount+. While they call the news “disappointing,” they also say they’re holding out hope that the second season will get picked up elsewhere, as they’re now shopping Prodigy to other streaming platforms and broadcasters. As the statement reads:
“Star Trek has taught my brother and me to strive for a better future. While news of Star Trek: Prodigy not returning to Paramount+ is disappointing, [we] have faith this show will be picked up by a new home to help grow our fervent fanbase and inspire the next generation of Star Trek fans. Our talented and passionate team of artists are working tirelessly to complete S2. And we are staying positive and hopeful that our amazing fans will get to see it soon! Janeway would never give up, so why would we? Let’s follow her orders and ‘Go Boldly.’”
Star Trek: Prodigy writer Aaron J. Waltke also commented on the news on Twitter. He posted a tweet that reads:
“In a world of deep uncertainty, I choose joy. It can feel radical to reject cynicism. To try every day to make the world a tiny bit better. Hope is a tool. It can be a battery, a shield, or a weapon. And it can be used in service of others. We build a road, stone by stone.”
Star Trek: Prodigy Has a Second Season in Post-Production, Will It See the Light of Day?
Star Trek: Prodigy brings back Kate Mulgrew to reprise her role from Star Trek: Voyager as Kathryn Janeway. The show’s voice cast also includes Brett Gray as Dal R’El; Ella Purnell as Gwyndala; Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog; Angus Imrie as Zero; Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk; Dee Bradley Baker as Murf; Jimmi Simpson as Drednok; and John Noble as Diviner.
“The Paramount+ series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Star Trek: Prodigy, Queen of the Universe, and The Game have completed their runs on Paramount+ and will not be returning to the service,” a Paramount+ statement read when the show was canceled. “We want to extend our thanks to our tremendously talented cast and crew and our producing partners for their passionate work and dedication on these programs, and we wish them all the best on their future endeavors.”
Star Trek: Prodigy is still currently streaming on Paramount+ but is expected to be pulled within the next several days. Time will tell if season 2 gets picked up elsewhere. For now, the Hageman brothers have encouraged fans to save Prodigy by retweeting posts with the hashtag #SaveStarTrekProdigy.
