Victorians struggling with their power bills are set for a reprieve in the lead-up to Christmas, with the government now pledging to cover the cost.

To ease the burden on those struggling, Victorians can now apply for a $250 payment to go towards energy bills – money that will be directly transferred straight into bank accounts.

The idea is part of a $700 million scheme from the Victorian government, with the closing date in late January.

The program was established last year, but only 300,000 payments have been made, totalling just $76.6 million.

Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said there were many households who were eligible and urged people who needed help to apply.

“We want to help as many vulnerable households as we can − whether that’s through a quick call with the Victorian Energy Compare helpline, or by a visit to one of our program partners,” she said.

“This one-off $250 payment provides immediate financial relief for those struggling to pay their power bills.”

Those eligible include people who receive support payments from the government, are studying or are a veteran.

People applying must hold a pensioner concession card, or receive Jobseeker, Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, or hold a Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card.

The payment will be available for 12 months, but there is a limit of one per household.

The cashback offer is available through the Victorian Energy Compare website, with registrations closing January 31, 2022.

A form can be completed there and a household electricity bill from a retailer must also be submitted.

If you need assistance with your application, phone 1800 000 832.

People who may not have a computer or need help applying can get help through community outreach partners Brotherhood of St Laurence, Consumer Policy Research Centre, Good Shepherd and Neighbourhood House, Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria, Consumer Action Law Centre, and State Trustees Limited.
