In a recent study, we analyzed and determined the highest paying medical jobs in the United States in 2022, and cardiologists topped that list. But geography is integral to how much any occupation is paid because salaries vary from state to state and city to city. In order to identify the states where cardiologists earn the most money, we analyzed data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Occupational Employment Statistics (OES), and determined the top states where the average cardiologist salaries are highest.
Read on to find out the states where cardiologist salaries are the highest in 2022.
10 States Where Cardiologists Earn the Most Money in 2022
Looking at the country as a whole, the average cardiologist salary in the U.S. is $353,970. That dwarfs the average annual wage for all occupations in the nation, $58,260. Of course, cardiologists go through years, even decades, of education and specialization to learn and perfect their practice. And this education and training often comes with a hefty price tag. So, it’s perhaps not surprising that the average cardiologist salary is significantly greater than the average annual wage for all jobs taken together.
Below is a breakdown of the top 10 states where cardiologists earn the most money. And, despite it’s traditionally high pay for doctors, California is not one of the top 10 states where cardiologists earn the most.

Trends in the Cardiologist Salaries
Geographically, the top 10 states with the highest average cardiologist salaries are a mixed bunch but do show some patterns. Based on Census Bureau-designated regions in the U.S., five states are located in the U.S. South: 1) Maryland, 2) Texas, 3) Alabama, 4) Florida, 5) Virginia. The other five states are more scattered, with No. 3 New Hampshire and No. 9 Pennsylvania representing the Northeast region, No. 4 New Mexico and No. 6 Washington representing the West region, and No. 10 Kansas representing the Midwest region.
In all of the top 10 states, the average cardiologist salary is well over $300,000 a year, with the lowest being just under $350,000 a year. The state with the lowest average cardiologist salary (that the BLS has data for) is Montana, at $230,380 per year.
Table of the States Where Cardiologists Earn the Most Money

Below you’ll find a table that includes the state, the average hourly cardiologist salary, and the average annual cardiologist salary. States are ranked in order of highest cardiologist salary to lowest.
