Joy Ride star Stephanie Hsu is an Oscar nominee, as she was up for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards this year for her role in the hit film Everything Everywhere All at Once. She was one of two stars of the film who’d been nominated for the same award, as she was competing against co-star Jamie Lee Curtis for the Oscar. Ultimately, Curtis picked up the win, marking the first time the movie veteran won an Academy Award. It was one of several wins for Everything Everywhere All at Once, which swept the Oscars by winning seven of its eleven nominations.
While Curtis’ win has drawn high praise, there have benn some Hsu fans who felt she should have been the one to win the Oscar. While Hsu says in a new interview (via Rolling Stone) that she’s “grateful” for the fans who’ve been supporting her, she wants to clear by air by making it clear she couldn’t be happier with JLC getting the win. Hsu wants everyone to know she’s “joyfully at peace” with her co-star winning the Oscar, noting that she feels “so lucky” just to have gotten a nomination.
“For the record: I f**king die-hard-love Jamie Lee Curtis,” Hsu says. “I am so f**king happy for her. She, like, goes to bed with that Oscar, and I’m so f**king happy she does. And I’m so grateful for all the people fighting for me, but let it be known that I am joyfully at peace.”
From there, Hsu goes on to give some extra credit to Curtis for helping to pave the way for her Everything Everywhere All at Once co-stars.
“Also, if it weren’t for Jamie, I don’t think that all of us would have been able to lean in as hard as we did,” Hsu explains. “Almost no other Asian people had been nominated. Ke [Huy Quan] even quit the business. We had that feeling before we really started to gain momentum where we were like, ‘This feels impossible, and we’re embarrassed that we even believe we’re worthy of being celebrated, because it feels so unfamiliar to our bodies,’ and Jamie was the one who was like, ‘This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. You never know if something is gonna land, and if this lands, this is going to change people’s lives. Let’s link arms and take this all in.’”
Stephanie Hsu Couldn’t Be Happier for Jamie Lee Curtis
To see Curtis getting such strong support from Hsu may not be a big surprise for those who watched the win happen live at the Academy Awards. When it was announced that Curtis had won, Hsu had an especially excited reaction that was noticeably caught on camera. It was clear then how thrilled Hsu was to see Curtis win the prestigious award, but if anyone was still wondering, it would seem that the actress couldn’t make her true thoughts any more apparent.
You can catch Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu in Joy Ride, now playing in theaters.
