Throughout his career, Stephen A. Smith has never been shy about giving his opinion on the athletes he covers.
At times, those opinions can draw the ire of said athletes. That appears to be the case with Kyrie Irving, who Smith addressed Thursday.
In an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Smith revealed that he has “personal differences” with the new Mavericks guard.
Smith prefaced his statement by saying that at the end of the day, he would be “fair” and “objective” to any player that he covers, but also noted that “[Kyrie] knows why” the two would be at odds and that he doesn’t think the issues will ever be settled.
Smith was notoriously critical of the 8-time All-Star during his time in Brooklyn, often noting that if it were up to him, he would not give Irving the long-term contract that he will soon be eligible for in free agency.
“You can’t pay him more than one year at a time,” Smith said. “You can’t trust that he’s going to show up to work.”
Stephen A. did say that the differences between them would not stop him from calling Kyrie a “phenomenal player.”
We’ll have to see if the two can reconcile their differences now that Irving is out of Brooklyn.
