Grateful Dead legend Phil Lesh, indie-rock icon Liz Phair, Bay Area blues great Taj Mahal, country star LeAnn Rimes and the acclaimed San Francisco Symphony are among the acts set to perform at the 2022 Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco.
The 10-week series kicks off on June 12 with the stellar Bay Area doubleheader of R&B/funk masters Tower of Power and hip-hop legend Too $hort.
The complete lineup, which was announced today, is listed below.
Admission to the concerts is free, but fans must reserve their spots in advance at sterngrove.org. The organization will begin taking online reservations on May 31 for the season opener with Tower of Power and Too $hort. All concerts start at 2 p.m.
The opening show re-creates the lineup from last year’s final Stern Grove concert, which was canceled after a water main break on Sloat Boulevard flooded the festival grounds. Repair work on the park is continuing but has progressed to the point that the full 2022 season can proceed.
“We are excited to highlight so many legendary Bay Area artists in our 85th season and also to continue our trend in recent years of presenting more and more high profile artists at Stern Grove Festival,” says executive director Bob Fiedler. “From my perspective, this is our best lineup ever, and we truly hope that everyone can find at least one artist that appeals to them over the course of our summer season, ”
There’s certainly a lot to like about the lineup — from the amazing country vocal work of Rimes and powerful indie-rock offerings of Liz Phair to the always enjoyable San Francisco Symphony and the incredible blues of Taj Mahal.
Yet, it’s certainly the addition of Lesh that really jumps off the page (or, more likely, your screen), given the Dead’s fabled history of performing free concerts in San Francisco. Phil Lesh and Friends close out the festival by performing at Stern Grove’s annual Big Picnic event on Aug. 14.
Lesh and company — featuring guitarists Scott Metzger, Grahame Lesh and John Scofield as well as drummer Joe Russo and keyboardist Benmont Tench — had previously announced a gig at Stanford University’s Frost Amphitheater on June 4. Show time is 6 p.m. and tickets are $75-$80, axs.com. Hopefully, that’s the same superb lineup of Friends who will play the Stern Grove show.
