Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green got the bulk of blame for the team’s decision to trade Jordan Poole, but head coach Steve Kerr said the explanation is much simpler.
In a conversation with Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, Kerr offered some thoughts on the Warriors’ offseason approach.
At the time, the trade that sent the 24-year-old Poole to Washington and brought 38-year-old future Hall of Famer Chris Paul to the Bay Area wasn’t official, so he couldn’t mention either by name, but it’s clear that Kerr was referring to the deal.
“We’re going to be a lot different,” Kerr told Kawakami. “The last thing I’m going to do is say anything about a team that just won a championship a year ago and then fought through a difficult season. Made a helluva run at the end of this year. I’ve loved this group that we’ve had the last couple years.
“But the biggest point is that we sensed we needed a shift. Didn’t mean we needed an overhaul, but we needed a shift of some sort. I think everybody in the organization sensed that. And it feels like we’ve made a pretty significant shift without giving up our identity and our sense of who we are as a team. I think, all in all, it’s a very positive shift.”

The Warriors had previously signed Poole to a four-year, $123 million contract extension, which goes into effect this season while he’s with the Wizards. Clearly, they envisioned him being a major piece of their future at the time.
Plans change though, and now Poole will have the chance to showcase himself for a new team while Paul tries to help Golden State make one more title push.
