Steven Spielberg’s James Bond Easter Egg in Sean Connery’s Indiana Jones movie

Back in 1989, Harrison Ford returned as his archaeologist adventurer for a third time in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

This time around he’d be joined by original James Bond star Sean Connery as the lead’s father.

This was a perfect fit given that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg had created Indiana Jones as a character to rival 007 when the latter director had originally wanted to shoot a Bond movie.

Yet Connery wasn’t the only 007 alumni in the Last Crusade, as the movie also co-starred A View To A Kill Bond girl Alison Doody as Dr Elsa Schneider and For Your Eyes Only Bond villain Julian Glover as baddie Walter Donovan.

With three former Bond actors in the mix, Spielberg couldn’t resist putting a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Easter Egg into a scene with all three actors.

In the temple at the end of the Last Crusade, Indy, his father and the Nazis are trying to get past the booby traps to reach the Holy Grail.

Forcing our hero to go and fetch it, Donovan shoots Henry Jones Sr, meaning his only hope of survival is to drink from the Cup of Christ itself for its legendary healing properties.

Knowing this scene included three Bond stars, Spielberg had the villains shoot the original 007 with a Walther PPK, the signature weapon of Ian Fleming’s spy.

The Schlocketeer, who spotted this, wrote on Twitter: “In INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, Donovan shoots Henry with a Walther PPK.

“Which means a Bond villain shoots James Bond with Bond’s gun while a Bond girl stands beside him!… Spielberg is a huge nerd and we’re all the better for it.
