Stirrup leggings come Mugler and Balmain approved – here’s how to wear them

If you’re a firm believer that comfortable and chic cannot coexist in an outfit, let me introduce you to stirrup leggings. You likely remember them being popular in the 80s and 90s, when lycra was all anyone would wear, and you’ve noticed their presence on the ‘new in’ sections of your favourite online stores. If you’ve never given them much thought ’til now, let this be the sign you were looking for: they come designer-approved.

Mugler, Balmain, Saint Laurent and Khaite (to name a few) have all given stirrup leggings the thumbs up; they’ve come a long way from the equestrian uniforms they were once intended for. That said, this isn’t their first rodeo since the late 20th-century. Jacquemus featured a rib-knit knee-high pair during the autumn/winter 2020 show, then Isabel Marant presented a classic black pair at her spring/summer 2021 showcase. So what’s the reason for their consistent comebacks?

Plain black leggings, gym leggings and wet look/leather look leggings all have their pros, but stirrup leggings offer an effortless-yet-elevated take on the trend that the others can’t quite match. The secret to their success? Not only do they offer a streamlined, elongating effect, but they keep you warm – hence why so many base layers to ski clothes feature ankle straps – and prevent ride-up throughout the day. Genius.

As for how to style them? Show off the stirrup (obviously) with a pair of pointy heels or loafers and take note from Instagram’s royalty for the rest. Think; all-black-everything for an influencer-approved OOTD.
