Stop strawberries from going mouldy or mushy for 10 days

When stored properly in the fridge using one of the below methods, strawberries can stay fresh for an extra week.

It is best to always examine berries for mould or other signs of spoilage before eating them.

1. Air-tight glass container

Dry, airtight strawberries should last in the refrigerator for seven days or longer.

Transfer unwashed strawberries into a glass storage container – this can also be a jar – and make sure it’s sealed tight.

2. Paper towel method

Place a clean, dry paper towel in a container and put the unwashed strawberries on top. The paper towel absorbs moisture and reduces the chance of berries going mouldy. Close the lid and place the container in the fridge.

3. Rinse with vinegar solution

Some home chefs believe strawberries hold up best when first submerged in a vinegar solution.

Using one-part vinegar (white or malt) and three parts water, soak the strawberries in a bowl for a few minutes.

Rinse the berries in a colander to remove the vinegar residue and smell, then pat the berries dry and place them on a clean paper towel in a glass container. Loosely place the lid on and store it in the refrigerator.

While this method is effective in reducing the chance of mould, some chefs claim it can wilt berries and make them taste duller.

How to freeze strawberries

If you’re concerned about strawberries going mouldy or mushy before you get to eat them, consider popping them in the freezer.

Frozen strawberries taste delicious in ice cream or in smoothies with other berries such as raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries.

You can also thaw frozen strawberries and include them in a cupcake mix and bake them.

Simply add the strawberries to a sealable bag or airtight container and place them in the fridge – they stay fresh for 10 to 12 months.

To thaw frozen strawberries, simply move them from the freezer to the fridge, where they should stay for at least six hours.

You can also defrost strawberries by running them under cold water for at least 30 minutes, or by placing them in a bowl within a larger bowl that’s filled with cold water. This method takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

Just note that, once thawed, strawberries will appear a bit darker, and boast a much softer texture.
