The end is near for Stranger Things. The critically acclaimed Netflix series, which debuted with low expectations in 2016, quickly became one of the streaming platform’s biggest icons, and fans can’t wait for the fifth and final installment, set to arrive sometime in 2024 or even later due the writer’s strike.
After not-so-well-received second and third parts, the series returned in 2022 with its fourth installment and completely surprised the audience and critics, going back to its roots and finally presenting the true villain behind everything that happens in the Upside Down and therefore in Hawkins.
However, the most recent episodes left many questions unanswered, especially regarding Jame Campbell Bower’s Vecna. Fortunately, the new season will answer many of those questions and provide a satisfying ending, or at least that’s what Finn Wolfhard revealed in an interview with Collider:
“Well, I think it answers an insane amount of questions about the lore of Stranger Things, the world-building. I think a lot of people will be happy with getting back– It’s the last season, so we kind of want to get back to the roots of why the show was so special in the first place, and why the dynamics are so special in the first place, and sort of getting back to that. It’s gonna be really exciting. I’m excited, obviously, to go back and shoot it. I think it’s gonna be very sad, but I’m also just excited, as a fan, to get into it, and I’m excited to see where everyone– I didn’t even know how it ends yet, truly. I’ve only read the first three, so we’ll see. But yeah, I’m excited to see where all the characters’ journeys go.”
The Future of Stranger Things
Beyond season 5, which will feature the ultimate battle between Vecna and the whole army from the Upside Down against the protagonists, Netflix doesn’t want to let Stranger Things go and they want to keep expanding the universe with new spinoffs.
An animated series is already in the early stage of development. Although no details have been revealed about it, it’s rumored to be set in a different city or even country, and will actually be a story within the same universe but will not include any of the main characters from the original show. Eleven was one of the characters that could have had her own series, but it was confirmed that it won’t happen at least for now. But there are plenty of other characters that could be interesting to explore such as Hopper, one of the fans favorites to have a prequel.
Eddie Munson, played by Joseph Quinn, was one of the biggest surprises from season 4 and even though his character died, fans would love to see him again. In fact, an upcoming novel will explore the life of Eddie before the events of the show, so that would be another good story to adapt to the screen in the future.
