Topline
Troubling social media posts from Edward Durr came to light Thursday after the truck driver and first-time political candidate improbably defeated the longtime Democratic leader of the New Jersey state Senate, NJ.com reported.
Key Facts
The Republican attracted national attention for his shocking victory over state Sen. Steve Sweeney, who has held the post of Senate president since 2010.
Durr called Islam a “false religion” and a “cult of hate” and the central Muslim prophet Mohammed a “pedophile” in a 2019 tweet.
In a 2017 tweet, he referred to transgender American military whisteblower Chelsea Manning as a “she/him ‘shit’” and a “shim.”
He has likened Covid-19 restrictions and vaccine mandates to the treatment of Jews in the Holocaust, during which 6 million Jews were systematically murdered, in multiple Facebook posts this year.
Durr has not yet responded to Forbes’ request for comment.
Big Number
$1,813. That’s how much Durr’s campaign spent in the state Senate race, compared to$490,000 by Sweeney.
Tangent
Many Republicans celebrated Durr’s rise from obscurity to public office, including Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who tweeted Durr’s win represents “today’s Republican party.”
Crucial Quote
Regarding his decision to challenge Sweeney as a heavy underdog, Durr told NJ.com Wednesday: “I don’t know if I truly am fearless or stupid. Because who in their right mind would take on a person with that kind of power and clout?”
