Not all of the summer movie action takes place in theaters, of course. Here are some noted streaming releases headed our way.
“The Mother”: Jennifer Lopez flexes her toned muscles as a former assassin out to save the daughter she abandoned from creeps hunting them down in Alaska. Gael Garcia Bernal chews it up as her co-star. Niki Caro (“Whale Rider”) directs. Details: Out May 12, Netflix.
“Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie”: Davis Guggenheim’s exceptional and life-affirming documentary takes a candid, at times unorthodox, look at the beloved star who seeks to demystify what it’s like to be someone with Parkinson’s disease. Details: May 12, Apple TV+.
“Crater”: In this sci-fi adventure, a teen from a lunar mining colony blasts off with three buddies on a trip to a crater. Details: May 12, Disney+.
“White Men Can’t Jump”: In this remake of the 1992 Ron Shelton comedy/drama, Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow look — from a very promising trailer — that they got game, as well as some serious comedic timing together. Details: May 19, Hulu.
“Flamin’ Hot”: Eva Longoria’s feature debut charts the critical role that Richard Montanez (Jesse Garcia), a janitor at a Frito-Lay plant, played in the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos snack. Details: June 9, Hulu and Disney+.
“Jagged”: A new girlfriend could be the reason why a young woman suffers from disorienting visions that find her twirling around in a time loop. Details: June 15, Hulu.
“Extraction 2”: Yes, the first Chris Hemsworth stuntfest was dumb, but it was also fun. Expect at the very least one more single long tracking shot of action that made the original special. Other good news is that stuntman-turned-director Sam Hargrave returns for seconds to bring Tyler Rake (Hemsworth) back from the dead. Details: June 16, Netflix.
“Stephen Curry: Underrated”: All Warriors fans will want to make a fast break to electronic devices to watch Oakland filmmaker Peter Nicks’ invigorating documentary that intermixes Curry’s critical seasons with the Warriors and the Wildcats at Davidson College. Details: July 21, Apple TV+.
“Heart of Stone”: “Wonder Woman’s” Gal Gadot engages in spy games alongside “Fifty Shades of Grey’s” Jamie Dornan. “The Aeronauts” director Tom Harper helms this release. Details: Aug. 11, Netflix.
“Red White & Royal Blue”: Casey McQuistion’s 2019 best-selling romance on the attraction and courtship of the son of an American president and a British prince aims to make hearts swell. Stars Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine certainly look to turn up the heat. Details: Aug. 11, Prime.
“Lift”: Kevin Hart and Gugu Mbatha-Raw take to the unfriendly skies to (hopefully) prevent a terrorist attack. Details: Aug. 25, Netflix.
