The Fremont Union High School District is accepting applications to fill a vacancy on its five-member board of trustees. The vacancy was created by the death of trustee Roy Rocklin.
Rocklin, a Sunnyvale resident, died on Sunday, March 19, from Merkel Cell Carcinoma, a rare and virulent form of skin cancer.
After designing and developing instruments used in analytical chemistry for 25 years, Rocklin switched careers and taught chemistry and physics for 10 years at Lynbrook High School. He was elected as a board trustee in 2016.
Lynbrook is one of five high schools in the district, which serves approximately 10,000 students from Cupertino, Los Altos, San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga and Sunnyvale. The district’s Adult School serves an additional 1,000 students at a variety of venues.
Any registered voter residing within district boundaries is eligible to serve as a trustee, excepting school district employees. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and be citizens of California. The provisional appointee will serve until the end of Rocklin’s current term in November 2024.
Application packets are available at www.fuhsd.org. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 21. Submit applications by mail to district communications coordinator Rachel Zlotziver at 589 W. Fremont Ave., Sunnyvale, 94087 or via email to [email protected]. All submitted materials are public record.
The board generally meets in public session on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. Eligible candidates will be interviewed at a public meeting of the board, which anticipates taking action on the appointment no later than May 8.
For more information, contact the superintendent’s office at 408-522-2202.
Donations in Rocklin’s memory can be made to AVID Senior Scholarships via the Fremont Union High Schools Foundation, 589 W. Fremont Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94087 or fuhsd.org/academics/academic-support/avid.
