Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia went viral yesterday for seemingly flopping after being nudged with an elbow by Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic. The move led to Jokic being hit with a technical foul and helped pave the way for Ishbia’s Suns to win the game and even the series.

But there’s plenty of reason to believe that it was intentional. He was, after all, a former college basketball player.

Fans were reminded after the clip of Ishbia went viral that he used to play college basketball at Michigan State. He wasn’t exactly a superstar for Tom Izzo, but did get onto the court in their 2000 national title win against Florida.

Ishbia scored just 28 points in three years for the Spartans. He went into business after graduating and took over as CEO of United Wholesale Mortgage in 2013.

As a result fans have been having all kinds of fun with that knowledge. Just about everyone agrees that Ishbia tried to fool the referees into giving Jokic a technical foul.

“Jokic just tried to rip the ball out of hands of new Suns owner, then gave him a shove. Mat Ishbia played for Izzo at Michigan State. Jokic correctly gets a tech,” Skip Bayless wrote.

“Michigan State instincts took over for Ishbia,” another user wrote.

“Ishbia was delaying the game and then he flopped. Did he learn that at Michigan State?” a third fan asked fellow Michigan State legend Magic Johnson.

By hook or by crook, Ishbia’s team got the win.
