Super Computing And Storage On Earth And In Space

At the 2022 Super Computing Conference (SC22) DDN announced a new reference architecture in collaboration with Atos. The company also showed enhancements to its DDN Insight monitoring interface. Insights monitors hardware on workloads from a single dashboard down to the individual job level.

According to the company’s press release, “DDN worked in tight collaboration with Atos on this new Reference Architecture to advance DDN’s goal of simplifying the adoption of advanced AI infrastructure for enterprises and research institutions. Historically, storage systems were often chosen to complement compute infrastructure as it was being deployed. This approach leads to silos of data and requires data movement to use the optimal compute platform for a certain stage of processing. DDN’s approach allows data to stay in a single manageable system, regardless of the compute technology used, with scalable performance and capacity to accommodate any rate of growth.”

Panasas also announced data management and analytics tools for high performance computing applications as part of its PanFS software suite. The company said that, “The PanView and PanMove software solutions bring enhanced data management and analytics tools to Panasas storage that improve visibility and portability of precious data assets at organizations deploying high-performance computing (HPC), high-performance data analytics (HPDA), and artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) workloads at scale.”

The two products resulted from a strategic relationship between Panasas and Atempo These products can be used with Atempo’s Miria products to enable replications, synchronization and replication to backup and archive targets including tape and Azure and Google cloud object storage.

Another interesting development for computing, networking and storage, taking computing to another level, is an announcement by LEOcloud about a strategic collaboration agreement with Axiom Space Inc. Axiom Space is developing a commercial space station for developing and delivering space-based cloud services.

According to LEOcloud, “Space Edge™ Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) will enable scalable, resilient, highly reliable Space-hardened cloud edge computing services that are a seamless extension of today’s terrestrial cloud services. Space Edge IaaS multi-cloud service will be part of the critical infrastructure that is evolving in Space where data can be sourced from anywhere in Space and on Earth to be processed by workloads hosted in Space. LEOcloud Space Edge IaaS includes support for Red Hat OpenShift, the industry’s leading enterprise Kubernetes platform, to enable cloud services across hybrid cloud and at the edge with greater speed, flexibility and consistency.”

LEOspace and Microsoft are collaborating to enable Azure Space by hosting on LEOcloud’s IaaS. Axiom Space plans to install its first commercial module on the International Space Station in 2025.
