Supermoon of 2022: The biggest Supermoon of 2022 is here. According to NASA, July’s Supermoon, also called Buck Supermoon, will be visible for three days, starting Wednesday. 

According to NASA, the phenomenon will be witnessed at 12:08 am. It said that people around the world will be able to witness the Buck Supermoon till Friday early morning. The Moon will appear full for about three days.

What is a Supermoon:  

A Supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the Moon’s closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, a point known as perigee. This phenomenon makes Moon to look even bigger and brighter.

In 2022, according to NASA, a total of four such phenomenon will occur of which the third one will be visible in July for three days. The fourth and last Supermoon is slated to make its appearance on August 12.

Supermoons only happen three to four times a year and always appear consecutively. Throughout most of Earth’s orbit around the Sun, perigee and the full Moon do not overlap.

NASA said that July’s Supermoon which is also known as the Buck Supermoon will also be called the Thunder Moon. The interesting history about the name Buck supermoon is as below.

According to NASA, in the 1930s the Maine Farmer’s Almanac began publishing Native American names for full moons. Hence, according to this Almanac, the Algonquin tribes of what is now the northeastern United States called this the Buck Moon.

Also, Early summer is normally when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. They also called this the Thunder Moon because of early summer’s frequent thunderstorms .
