Suryakumar Yadav became the first India player to be dismissed for three consecutive first-ball ducks in ODI cricket as Australia secured a series-clinching victory in Chennai.

The No. 1 T20 batter in the world was dismissed for golden ducks by Mitchell Starc in the first two matches of the series, before being bowled by Ashton Agar in the series decider.

Chasing 270 to win the series, India moved to 65-0 and 185-4 before Australia fought back through spinners Agar and Adam Zampa.

Agar dismissed Virat Kohli for 54 and Yadav first ball, while Zampa took four wickets as Australia restricted India to 248 to win by 21 runs.

Another first-ball failure saw Yadav become the 14th player to suffer three golden ducks in a row in ODI cricket and the first from India.

The victory sends Australia above India to the top of the ODI world rankings, with a 50-over World Cup coming up later in the year.

It is India’s first home ODI series defeat since 2019 and ensures Australia return home on a high following a 2-1 defeat in the Test series.

Australia captain Steve Smith said: ‘It’s been an enjoyable tour and a really good performance from the boys today. The tail battled really hard to get us up to a competitive score and then we kept taking wickets throughout.’

India skipper Rohit Sharma added: ‘The wicket was a little challenging towards the end but I don’t think we batted well. Partnerships are crucial and we failed to build them today.

‘We are brought up on these wickets and sometimes you need to apply yourself and give yourself a chance. It was important for one batter to carry on and take the game deep. It just didn’t happen.’
