Susan Boyle ‘almost unintelligible’ and ‘unable to speak clearly’ after stroke

Susan Boyle reportedly had to learn how to speak clearly again and also had to have intensive vocal coaching so that she could sing after she dealt a crushing blow last year.

The 62-year-old said on Sunday night that she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to perform again due to her health battle, which she hadn’t spoken about prior to the Britain’s Got Talent 2023 final.

It has now been claimed the I Dreamed A Dream singer made an amazing recovery after a stroke left her speech “almost unintelligible”.

Sources have revealed Susan was in good health on the eve of the stroke last April but has now spent the past year working on her vocals and her speech after being left with significant muscular weakness down one side, a dropped face and slurred speech.

“The PA came over to see her that morning, they often go out for breakfast together but as soon as she saw Susan she realised that they needed to go straight to hospital,” a source told Daily Mail.

They continued: “She was able to walk but had a dropped face and was slurring her words. She was capable of speech but it was hard to work out what she was saying.

“There were fears that the stroke might mean that Boyle, who has sold around 25 million albums in her career, might never sing again.”

It was reported Susan had been left devastated and was “deeply upset” about her health woes and went on to hire a private speech therapist once she had left the hospital.

The source added that while Susan has slowed down with work commitments there could be plans to potentially do a concert tour in 2024.

Express.co.uk have approached Susan Boyle’s representatives for comment.

Susan took to Instagram and addressed her latest performance on the BGT stage and shared a series of photos taken on Sunday night.

She told her 83,000 followers: “Tonight I had the privilege of returning to @bgt and performing with the wonderful cast of @lesmizofficial. This evening was even more special for me as in April of 2022 I had a stroke.

“For the past year I have worked so hard to get my speech and singing back, with the sole aim of being able to sing on stage again & tonight my hard work & perseverance paid off, singing the song that started it all, ‘I Dreamed A Dream.'”

The Scottish performer returned to the ITV show to perform the song that made her famous during the BGT auditions in 2009, I Dreamed A Dream, with West End performer Lucie Jones.

She arrived on stage alongside the cast of Les Misérables for the incredible comeback song.

“Susan, it is so lovely to see you, welcome,” Dec told the singer following her performance, before saying: “It’s hard to believe that you appeared on this show in 2009, 14 years ago.

“How does it feel to be back at BGT?”

Susan replied: “It feels great. It’s really good.

“It’s extra special for me actually, last April there, I suffered a minor stroke and I thought it’d be crazy to be back on stage and I have done it.”
