Susanna Reid skewers Lammy over Truss’ U-turn on tax cuts

Good Morning Britain presenters Susanna Reid and Ed Balls were joined by David Lammy to discuss his opinion of Liz Truss becoming the UK’s new Prime Minister. When questioned on what he thought of her plans to cut taxes, Reid put Lammy on the spot and left him scrambling for a reasonable answer.

Balls began: “Lis Truss will face her first Prime Minister’s Questions after declaring Britain can ride out the storm.”

Reid continued: “During her campaign, she dismissed what she called handouts but she is looking at options to freeze household energy bills as a massive cost of living rescue package.

“We are joined now by David Lammy who worked opposite Liz Truss and Shadow Foreign Secretary before she was appointed Prime Minister.

“She has what she calls a bold plan, and bold plans usually require funding, a few people and I wonder if you share this alarm, were concerned when her first priority was to cut taxes.”

Lammy explained: “Look I think that is an extraordinary thing that she has maintained throughout what was a very right-wing campaign where she appealed to the far ends of the Conservative Party.

“And in the end what tax cuts mean is a lot of money, 30 billion (pounds) blown, very little prospect of growth as a consequence and of course, you know that for working people they don’t benefit from those tax cuts.

“That is a curious thing to do when your country is facing a recession and is in a high inflationary period, it could be damaging to the British economy.”

Reid continued: “You would imagine your leader Sir Keir Starmer would go big on that so to speak, at Prime Minister’s Questions today.

“But clearly there are things we have been calling for months, we called for a windfall tax, it looks like she is going to mirror our policy to freeze bills.

“What we are not clear on is where the money is coming from. It looks like she might be planning to get the consumer to pay by stacking costs down the line on those bills, and of course, we would oppose that.”

Not happy about his explanation, Reid slammed: “Mr Lammy, we are inundated this morning with people who have had terrible experiences within the NHS.

“I am not for a moment criticising one single member of our wonderful nursing, doctors, paramedics staff.
