Suspicious package prompts temporary lockdown at Terminal C at Newark Liberty Airport

NEWARK, N.J. — There is new information on a suspicious package discovered earlier Sunday at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The incident disrupted operations for hours.

A source told CBS2’s Lisa Rozner authorities are reviewing surveillance video to determine who left the suspicious object at Terminal C. Rozner saw police activity outside of the bathroom on Level 1 during the afternoon.

The Transportation Security Administration said someone reported an unattended item in a restroom in Terminal C and after that all of Level 1 was evacuated and the Federal Aviation Administration did hold some flights.

The Essex County Bomb Squad was brought in to remove it. The Port Authority K-9 Unit was also on hand.

“We came through global entry, usual 10-minute wait. Then the chute stopped. We thought someone hit the red button and maintenance was needed, but five seconds after that they said the building is closed down for security purposes. No one may leave,” traveler Ron Goldfarb said.

“I was texting everyone. I was telling them ‘I’m good, I’m out here waiting, don’t worry about me. Everything is going to be fine.’ Of course, they worry about me,” added Jesus Ayala of Woodbridge.

Authorities have not released much information about what they found, but a source said they are reviewing video and using other investigative techniques to determine who left the suspicious object in the terminal.

The Port Authority said no one was injured.
