PIEDMONT — Vandalism showing a swastika and Hitler markings were found on the Piedmont High campus this week, police said.
The vandalism occurred in an area behind the Binks-Rawlings Gymnasium on the high school campus, police said in a statement posted to social media. Police did not specify what the Hitler markings looked like and did not release the images of them.
Police said they will place more officers than usual at the school and that they are working with the Piedmont Unified School District to determine how it happened.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we will be increasing our presence in and around all school facilities for the near future,” police wrote in their statement.
The discovery comes during the same week that an 18-year-old gunman entered an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and murdered 19 students and two teachers.
“The safety and security of students and staff are our highest priority,” Piedmont police said in their statement. “And in light of the tragedy in Uvalde, Texas, we cannot be too cautious.”
Police did not identify any suspects in the vandalism and said they continue to investigate.
