The CIF Southern Section boys and girls swimming and diving championships were held at the Riverside Aquatic Complex last week, culminating in an eventful Friday and Saturday that included a number of local athletes and programs being crowned CIF champions.
The CIF State swimming & diving championships will be held at Clovis Olympic Swim Complex at Clovis West High on May 11-13.
In Division 1, West Ranch senior Jonathan Gim won the 50-yard freestyle in 20.11 seconds and also won the 100-yard freestyle in 44.18. In addition to Gim’s two individual races, he participated in two more relay events, including the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay. West Ranch finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in those events.
Hart junior Lily Dormans won the girls 500 freestyle in 4 minutes, 50.08 seconds. Dormans was close to being a four-time CIF champion this year after finishing the runner-up in three other events – the 200 freestyle (1:48.97), the 200 medley relay (1:43.96), and the 400 freestyle relay (3:27.29). Dorman’s teammate, sophomore Aly Yokoyama, finished second in the 100 backstroke (55.03).
St. Francis junior Nathan Kim won two Division 2 CIF medals, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:37.12 and the 100 freestyle in 44:59.
In Division 3, Viewpoint senior Pierce Downs won the 200 freestyle in 1:39.79 and was part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team with junior Chase Cohen, junior Carter Ross, and senior Alex that on the event in 3:13.65. Oak Park junior March Yuan won the 200 individual medley in 1:56.45.
Oakwood senior Chung Richard won the 200 freestyle in 1:42.04 and the 500 freestyle 4:34.44. Sophomore Sophia Blietz of Santa Clarita Christian crowned herself a two-time CIF champion in the 100 butterfly (58.45) and the 100 backstroke (58.23).
SIERRA CANYON MAKES HISTORY
The Division 4 field was highlighted by Sierra Canyon’s boys 200 medley relay team made up of two freshmen and two sophomores in Anthony Kim, Jason Zhang, Luke Haas and Christopher Cain, who won the school’s first CIF title in swimming in a time of 1:46.71. Haas also won the 200 individual medley in 1:59.07.
The CIF championship marked the school’s fourth CIF team title this prep year after girls volleyball, football and girls basketball.
