Sydney Sweeney Brings Back the Peplum With Vintage Mugler

Last night’s HCA TV Awards honored some of the year’s best television shows, and among the many buzzy nominees was White Lotus’s Sydney Sweeney, who was nominated for best supporting actress in a limited series. Shortly before the ceremony began, the star hit the red carpet in a vintage frock that brought back the voluminous peplum silhouettes of the 2010s. But Sweeney’s mini dress is actually plucked from the 1980s—and by a designer known for his extremely sculptural designs.

Sweeney’s dress for the evening, which was styled by Molly Dickson, was a dark green velvet Thierry Mugler dress from 1981. The piece was sourced from New York Vintage, and its fanned-out accents (both at the bust and waist) gave it a theatrical feel. Mugler was the master of extraterrestrial-like shapes, and this design certainly proved to be a more glamorous take on the peplum tops we were all wearing in the 2010s—with skinny jeans and sock buns, to the club.

Given the dress certainly commanded attention, Sweeney and Dickson chose to accessorize the look minimally, with Jimmy Choo’s steel-toe pumps and elegant jewelry from De Beers including a dainty diamond necklace. So, does this ensemble prove that peplums are making a major 2022 comeback? Not just yet, but for now, Sweeney’s vintage take on the look was definitely a red carpet win.
