Y2K nostalgia is here to stay and the trend’s latest disciple, Sydney Sweeney, served up some throwback noughties realness for her red carpet appearance at last night’s MTV Movie & TV awards. There to celebrate her performance as Cassie in American teen drama Euphoria (where the series scooped up four awards, including a gong for Best Fight between Cassie and Maddy), Sydney referenced another iconic high school screen hit via her hair makeup and outfit for the evening.
Wearing her long blonde hair loose and semi straight, with kohl-lined eyes and nude lips, Sydney subtly nodded to Mean Girls’ queen bee, Regina George, who made army pants and flip flops fetch back in 2004. But zoom out and it looks like Sydney took inspiration from another Regina-endorsed ensemble, namely: mini skirts, heels and millennial pink.
The Euphoria actress wore a 2022 spin on Regina’s wardrobe with a pink side-buckle mini skirt that looks like it could have come straight off the rack at 1,3,5. She remixed Regina’s hot pink pointed heels with some silver open-toe skyscraper sandals and switched out the cardi and vest-top combo for a Gen Z update that saw her layer a sheer pink crop shirt over a sparkly gem-encrusted bralet.
